NX700QC16G Now $69.99

Yes (as pointed out by d wilson, whose self proclaimed named brings up way to many unsavory definitions, pointed out) the price has gone up. The price seems to frequently change and may go down again before Christmas. This is a great tablet with the Firmware upgrade. Got to look into getting something like a automatic price tracker thingy.

Friday, December 5, 2014

NX700QC16G is $59.99

The current price for the NX700QC16G is $59.99 at Walmart Online. A great deal made even better now with the firmware upgrade.

Applying Firmware Update for the NX700QC16G

Applying the Firmware Upgrade
for the NX700QC16G

Thank you to all parties on the Freaktab forum
and all those who commented this posting.
Special thanks to Brian December 4, 2014

NOTE: This will wipe out all apps and info on your tablet

NOTE: I am using
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Processor with 8 Gb RAM

NOTE: It has been reported that the driver install may not work on window 8. But it does appear to work fine on windows 7. Reported in comments below by d wilson December 4, 2014. A method to install the USB drivers is located at How To Install Nextbook7 (NX700QC16G) USB Drivers on Windows 8 & 8.1.

How to find it

-- Go to the Nextbook Website nextbookusa.com/download.php

-- Go to updates and select Firmware

-- Scroll down to updates and it is there

What You Will See & Download

Nextbook 7 (NX700QC16G)
firmware update instructions:

Directly to the right of this text is a button that will download the a docx file with instructions. Download this Instruction File. This is a Microsoft word compatible file. Wordpad in windows will open this file.

Download the Firmware Update File. This file is 2 gigabytes in size and downloads slowly. Since this is the only good file as far as I can tell.

You now have a instruction file and a firmware file.

Notes on Firmware Upgrade

This upgrade will get rid of the Data Partition. The Application Partition will now be 13.12 Gigabytes in size.

Lots of activity on the FreakTab forum by people reporting success at fixing the drivers.zip problem and installing the new firmware. Also lots of comments below.
I tried the replace the files without success. So I used Brian December 3, 2014 post in the comments below to download the drivers and sp flash tool.

How To Install Firmware Upgrade

NOTE: Use the links below to get the driver and SP Flash Tool. The ones at NextbookUSA do not work at this time.

Doing Step 1

Download the Driver File from China Gadgets Reviews MediaTek Smartphone Driver. Do the right click and Extract Here to decompress this file.

For windows 7 or earlier run the Mediatek Driver Install.bat file. Just pick yes or install to get pass the screens. If you have Windows 8 or later then try following the directions at How To Install Nextbook7 (NX700QC16G) USB Drivers on Windows 8 & 8.1.

Doing Step 2

Do the right click Extract Here to the Firmware file you got from NextbookUSA above.

Doing Step 3

Download SP_Flash_Tool rar or SP_Flash_Tool zip file. Use the file marked as new. Do the right click Extract Here to decompress this file.

Run flash_tool.exe in the SP_Flash folder..

Now you can follow the directions and pictures found in the Instruction docx file from NextbookUSA that you download above.

NOTE: Turn off tablet by holding power button down for a couple of seconds until a screen appears with a power off button and pick power off.

NOTE: I had to connect the tablet to several different usb ports before it would work. If it does not start up by showing progress in the bar at the bottom of the screen in 5 seconds then try another usb port.

Other Sources of Info

nextbook7.blogspot.com also a good run through on upgrading NX700QC16G and a guide to install USB drivers for windows 8.

FreakTab A entire thread on upgrading the firmware and rooting the NX700QC16G. I have not done it yet but I read that this tablet is easy to root once you do the firmware upgrade.

NX700QC16G Price Drop to $49.99

The NX700QC16G is currently $30 off from walmart

Firmware Update for Nextbook 7 NX700QC16G

Read in Forum about Firmware update for larger Application Partition at Freaktab.

Note that there seems to be a problem with it right now according to the forum.

I have not tried it yet and I am currently to busy.

I am sure that if there is a problem it will be fixed.

I will report back when I get a chance to try this.

NX700QC16G Review

NOTE: As of December 4, 2014 - There is a Update Firmware available that will increase application memory.

The NX700QC16G Android Table has impressive specifications which is the reason I bought it.

The tablet comes with a powerful ac/dc usb adapter for the wall and a thick usb cable. There is also a manual and a instruction card. Getting it running was pretty easy.

The casing is coated with a black rubbery coating which is not prone to finger prints. All the corners are rounded. The screen will pick up prints. All the connectors are at one end and all the buttons are on one side. The one speaker is in the rear and sounds weak. The camera is in the front with the screen and has vga (640x480) resolution which is barely passable.

The screen resolution is 1024x600 is not very high but was made clear from the walmart and nextbookusa website. I find it very usable with good colors and clear text. Viewing angle from the side fades quickly.

This is a pretty fast device for its price. A quad core processor with 1 Gb of RAM and 16GB of internal flash memory. With bluetooth 4 and GPS this device had all the stuff I was looking for. I found that the bluetooth and the wifi to operate very well. The signals seem to be very strong.

The one flaw with this device which is not clear from the walmart or nextbookusa website is the configuration of the internal flash memory. Advertised as 16Gb and clearly it is 16Gb. However there is only about 1Gb available for Applications which is clearly a little tight. There are things you can do to work around this which I explained in a previous post on Memory. But advertising 16Gb and leaving less than 1Gb for Applications is clearly annoying. Just going to the Google Play Store and the updating the installed apps will fill around 80% of the available Application Memory. Which can be a big stumbling block if you do not know how to deal with it and a lot of people will not.

I wrote a email to the manufacturer asking if they could possibly address the issue with some sort of upgrade. I never mentioned rooting in the email but the response was all about rooting voiding the warranty. If I was going to void the warranty why would I tell them?

As far as I can tell there is no clear way to root this device since the operating system, linux kernal and the device itself are all very new. For now I am ok with this. Down the road when a method of root is found and the warranty is expired I will root the device.

I recommend this tablet as it is fast and has recent tech and software. However do not buy this tablet for its high resolution screen, camera or built in speakers. For now I am satisfied with my purchase.

Memory Allocation & Managing Applications on Android

This post is about Internal Flash Memory Allocation and Managing Applications on Android Devices. Though I did research on my new tablet this post would apply to any Android device.

NOTE: There is a Update Firmware available that will increase application memory.

Memory Allocation

This device has 16Gb of Internal Memory.

Partitions (Memory areas)
System:1Gb (0.8Gb used)
Application:1Gb
Data: 12.3Gb (emulating a SD Card)

What is a Partition? You have Flash Drive which is 16Gb. You split it up into smaller logical drives. In this case you have a 1Gb partition for the system, a 1Gb partition for applications and a 12.3Gb partition for data. This looks like 3 Flash Drives.

Newer versions of Android are capable of using the whole 16Gb without partitions but when you connect the device to a computer then the computer will not see a 12.3Gb SD Card for data. A PC will not mount the device as a Drive.

There is also a microSD card slot that will take up to a 64Gb card. I have a 32Gb card in mine. Android will already have a bunch of google apps that are placed in the application partition. Updating them will take up even more room. Then there are a couple of apps included on the Nextbook or other devices which you may or may not want. This leaves little room to install your own apps.

What I would want. I would like to bring the Data Partition down to the 10Gbs and make the Application Partition 3.7Gbs. I would also have a microSD card too.

Managing Applications (Parts A and B)

Get a app like Clean Master to help you out. I highly recommend this application. You need to keep a couple of hundred megabytes open of Application Memory to do stuff with. For some it is tight.

Part A - Pre-Installed Apps

Pre-installed Apps come with your device. Most of them cannot be Uninstalled but there are still things you can do.

Using Clean Master go to App Manager - Uninstall then scroll down to Pre-installed apps. Some of these you may never use. Clean Master will tell you if what you are doing is safe and explain the effect of doing it. Things like Google+, Google Play Newsstand, Face Unlock, Play Games, VoiceCommand, Magic Smoke Wallpapers and more may be of no use. Hit Disable and Clean Master will take you to Setting-App Info for that app.

In Setting-App Info you can do 4 things. 1-Uninstall updates which usually makes the application smaller. 2-Clear data so any extra data for that app is deleted. 3-Clear Cache 4-Disable so the system does not have to deal with that app anymore.

Part B - Adding Apps

Some applications can move a part of themselves to Data Memory and some don't. The ones that can be moved will take up less space in the Application Memory. However all apps will take some space in the Application Memory. Also moving some of a app to Data Memory will probably make that app a little slower and the total memory (Application and Data) the app uses will be greater. But the Application Memory is what is important.

In Setting-App Info you can Move to internal storage which will put some of the app into Data Memory. Not all of the app can be moved. The size of the app left in Application Memory is shown as App below the Total.

Do I have to say - try to take up as little Application Memory as possible. It is kind of like a crazy game of install app - is app ok? - if not then uninstall app.

Examples for NX700QC16A

Vudu and Flixster do the same thing if you only have ultraviolet movies. Vudu is 3 times bigger than Flixster and none of it can be moved to Data Memory. Flixster is much smaller and some of it can be moved to Data Memory. So get rid of Vudu and just use Flixster. Of if you are not into ultraviolet movies then uninstall both.

Do you need Net Nanny or Nook? If not then uninstall them.

Other things you can do

Pressure manufacturers to give more Application Memory. Maybe they can have a setup app for your device where you define the size of Application Memory and Data Memory.

Root your device. Probably voids warranty. Tricky. Do lots of research. Hopefully someone does your kind of device and writes about it before hand. You are on your own. But you can make the device the way you want.

Pictures moved to the Pictures Page because I decided that showing all the pictures on the blog all the time was consuming bandwidth.

Walmart Errors

Walmart Page for this item is at Nextbook 7" Tablet 16GB Quad Core as of September 21, 2014

Additional Features:
Front 0.3MP webcam
microUSB 2.0 port, microHDMI port

There is no microHDMI port I emailed and answered a question to this effect several days ago. Someone on Walmart Q&A asked "Is there a microHDMI port?". My response (No) along with a couple of others saying the same posted 20 hours later. This error has been fixed as of September 23.

Technical Specifications:
1.6GHz MediaTek MT8127 ARM Cortex-A7 Quad-Core processor

Hard to tell if this is error. All test conducted says 1.3GHz. Still plenty fast.

What's in the Box:
Tablet, battery and AC adapter

Not a mistake saying there is a battery in the box. The battery is in the tablet which is sealed. So I would assume the battery is in there some where.
